Re: Meirs
We still don't know enough about Meirs to have an opinion about her.... Well, ok, we do have an opinion, but it's an uninformed knee-jerk opinion, so it really isn't worth anything.
But that's not really the point. We here at The Cabal have noticed something going on, and thought we should mention it. Bush has been getting quite a lot of flack for his choice, and many influential wingnut people and groups want him to pull back his nomination and pick someone else. Right?
But wait a minute, aren't many of these people and groups the same ones who just a few months ago were screeching like howler monkeys about filibusters and how *EVERY* nominee deserves an up-or-down vote? Right? According to their logic, doesn't she deserve a fair up-or-down vote by the entire Senate?
Or could it be all those fine people were only motivated by partisan politics, and not democratic principles like they claimed?

Oops.
I don't know, but maybe some speech writer should get fired for letting this slip past. Check out this passage from a Bush speech given before the National Endowment for Democracy.
| Like the ideology of communism, Islamic radicalism is elitist, led by a self-appointed vanguard that presumes to speak for the Muslim masses. Bin Laden says his own role is to tell Muslims, quote, "what is good for them and what is not." And what this man who grew up in wealth and privilege considers good for poor Muslims is that they become killers and suicide bombers. He assures them that his -- that this is the road to paradise -- though he never offers to go along for the ride.

Finally, something the 15-year-old in all of us can snicker at. The Brown/Wiener function.
