H-O-K-I-E-S
Wow. It's been a few years since I last went to a night game at Virginia Tech. I sat in the student section, and it was absolute madness.
I flew in the day of the game. A few hours of tailgating laid a nice foundation of bourbon and beer. Night settled over the campus, and the air got colder. A lot colder. Ice cubes spilled on the rental car bumper didn't melt.
Soon, people started heading to the stadium. I made my way to my seat in the student section. The atmosphere turned electric. The crowd was cheering, the band and cheerleaders were lining up for the team entrence. Then the first notes of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" came over the PA, and everyone went nuts. My whole section was jumping up and down on the bleachers.
Finally the team ran onto the field. Fireworks burst in the sky above. Perhaps a poet could put into words what a night game is like there, but this poor engineer can't. It was just... just... incredible.
Oh yeah, and we won, too! Record now stands at 8-0(5-0), with Miami coming to town next weekend.

Politics
Wow, a few days off and everything goes nuts. Miers withdraws (we still think it's hilarious she didn't get her up-or-down vote), Fitzmas comes and goes, Scooter resigns, FEMA emails show Michael Brown to be an incompetent more worried about getting enough time for dinner at restaurants than doing his job. Picture me with tented fingers saying "excellent" in my best Mr. Burns voice.
Now let's see if the good guys can turn all this into votes in 2006. Getting Tom DeLay arrested isn't that difficult, he's so crooked you had figure it was going to happen eventually. A DLC-led Democratic Party winning elections is much harder. Thank goodness for the netroots.
