Changing the world
You may not have noticed, but the world changed a little bit today. You probably heard about the guy in Blacksburg, Va who escaped custody, allegedly killed a couple of people, and was finally caught.
I heard about it to, but not from any media outlet. I was crusing Fark when I ran across the thread. Farkers were live-blogging from the VT campus, with cameras. Others found online streams of police scanners and were reporting what was being broadcast. Fark - and a bunch of slackers who should have been working - were on the story before any major news outlet. Even wikipedia was getting updated faster than CNN.
So why do I think this is so world changing? Because it's just a small step in the ongoing birth of people powered media. Admittedly, this has some drawbacks. But I believe that as mainstream media becomes consolidated under fewer and fewer corporate owners, the people creating new media channels has to be a net benefit.
Well, it sounds like they had a little bit of excitement over in England a few days ago. It's been exciting here, too. Not only has the terror alert level display in the left handle column changed to Bert, Ernie, and Elmo all at once, but I found the picture below on the Cosmic Variance blog. Those with a nerdy bent should get the joke.
Viva la revolution!
