  • Football Coverage Day 6-ish
Got caught up in happy hour and watching Nevada at Fresno St last night, so I missed yesterday's post. Oh well, close enough. Click here for days 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.

  • ACC preview in Haiku
Some of these are pretty clever.

  • How to cheer
There are a lot of college football teams. They stack up in different conferences, different rivalries, different regions. Some teams you love, some teams you hate. With so many games every weekend, how does one figure out who to cheer for in each game?

I've wondered about that question, and I think I have the answer boiled down into a rigorous hierarchy of rules. The rules go from top down so each rule overrules all of the ones below it. Here we go:

    1. VT - Obvious. VT first, last, and always.
    2. Teams who directly help VT by winning - Again, obvious. If VT is tied in the standings with team A, and they get beat by team B, team B has directly helped VT by winning.
    3. Navy - I'm not sure exactly why, or what the genisis of it is, but Navy is my number two team. Maybe it's family members who have served, maybe it's growing up in a city with a strong military presence, or in the same part of the country as Annapolis, maybe it's the fact Navy treated VT well when we played at Navy in '95, maybe it's the multiple Commander-in-Chief Trophies they've won lately. I like Navy football.
    4. In-conference schools not FSU - A strong ACC helps Tech. But the FSU fans are jerks... at least the ones I interacted with at the '99 Sugar Bowl. And I'm the type of guy who holds a grudge.
    5. Teams who indirectly help VT by winning - If team A beating team B helps VT with strength of schedule or something like that, it's an indirect help.
    6. Underdog and small conference schools - Who doesn't like to see the underdog win? No one cheers for Microsoft.
    7. Any school playing ND, FSU - Attention sports writers of the world! There are 119 div 1A schools. That's 118 more than the only school you write about: Notre Dame. And despite what you want, we're actually going to play a whole season before we hand the Heisman and the MNC to ND.
    8. Any school playing a SEC or Big12 opponent - Sort of an extension of the Underdog rule and the ND media hype rule. We'll grant an exception for Mississippi State, out of respect for StateSkills.
    9. Any school playing whichever bandwagon team is popular at the moment. - Just because everyone hates bandwagoners. Make a commitment to a team and stick with it, through thick and thin. That's the mark of a fan.

  • College Football Blogs
Hey Vic, how do you know so much about college football? Well, I don't really, but I do read a lot of blogs and other websites. Some are informative, some bring teh funnay, so are better than others. Here's all the ones I check in with:
