  • Halloween!
    It's October 31st, and you know what that means: The best holiday of the year and another Halloween post from the Victory Cabal. You might remember last year's post; this year we continue the tradition with more Halloween themed stuff and random goodies. Read on.

  • Decorations
    First, here's a guy who really knows how to decorate his yard. Many people like to put up a few decorations, but this guy really goes above and beyond.



  • Dead Cthulhu waits dreaming
    A few weeks ago, I asked for recommendations on Halloween reading. Calico Jack Rackham recommended The Call of Cthulhu and you can see in the left column that I'm reading it now. Good fun. It's where we first learn of the Dread Cthulhu, priest of the Great Old Ones, and is also the basis of the Cthulhu Mythos. Cthulhu has sunk into popular culture in many ways (part of his dark plan, in my opinion) from books, to Metallica songs, to The Simpsons, to plush toys.

    Well, I've found some more Cthulhu fun, which I present to you.

    First, Pharyngula blog found this great license plate. The bloody handprints really complete the effect. When Cthulhu wakes in R'lyeh truly it will be children first! (via Fark.)

    Second, and speaking of dying first, there's this hilarious Chick tract parody. If you're at all familiar with Chick's work, you should enjoy this. "...there is one thing we can hope for... TO BE EATEN FIRST!"

    Finally, there's just something about The Family Circus comic that invites parody. I don't know what it is, maybe it's the hyper-agressive wholesomeness, but it just invites it. You should enjoy The Cthulhu Circus.

  • The Black Death
    From The DailyKos, here's an interesting science journal-entry on The Black Death and the lasting effects it's had on disease resistance. And while we're on the science tip, here's a UCF professor trying to disprove ghosts and vampires. (via Fark.)

  • Theremin
    In my last Halloween post, I talked about the Theremin. Here's an article from The Onion's A.V. Club with more Theremin movies.

  • Radio fun
    Back in the 60s and 70s, there was a famous station in Louisville, KY called WAKY (790 AM). Here's a page of sound clips from back in the day, including movie spots and Halloween specials.

  • Pumpkins Pumpkins Pumpkins
    Random pumpkin stuff, including Jack-o-Laterns in Denmark (via Fark), agri-business mutant pumpkins (via Fark), and time-lapse video pumpkins(via Fark).

  • Spooky sounds
    I found a great blog called Scar Stuff, which has been featuring lots sound files of old ghost story, sound efx, and other spooky records. This post lists most of the recordings. I was especially excited to find this album, which I had as a kid. I remember listening to it over and over.

  • Fundy approved
    Halloween gets a lot of grief from the religious set. I'll make you guys a deal: You don't hassle me about Halloween, I won't hassle you about every other freakin religious holiday. And although the recommendations at the end of this column are completely lame, the Salavation Army has the right idea (via Fark).

  • Jack-o-Lantern
    Finally, here it is. This year's pumpkin. I got the design idea from a pattern, but I free-handed the carving. It's a little crooked in parts, but it's not bad considering.
