Last updated 8 Sep 2003
I will not cover every part of this program, this is just an overview.

This is the main buttons of Moni. Top row, from left to right.
Toggy Monitoring on/off, Start WinMX, Clear top Log window, Clear bottom Log window, Clear the entire WinMX Ignored List, About MX Moni
Bottom row, from left to right.

Log Section

This shows your Moni activity. The top section shows when a user connects and disconnects from your upload queue along with the reason. The bottom section shows you users that were allowed to be in your queue. It will also show activity related to auto-Trading.
Transfers Section
This section will display downloads being currently being managed by WinMX monitor. The top is downloads and the bottom is uploads.
Settings Section
-General

Checking this will prevent your upload queue from becoming larger than the number in the box.
-Ignore

This will automatically ignore any user with Asiatic multibyte characters in there name that tries to connect to you. I suggest not using this.
![]()
You enter text this box like the example above. Any user with words in the box in their username will be automatically removed from your upload queue.

This will remove any user with the connection types in the box from your upload queue. Keep in mind that these users will be ignored and you won’t be able to download from them.
![]()
This will prevent users from having more than the set number in your queue. In this example, the most times they can appear in your upload queue is 3 times. Any more after that will be disconnected.
-Whois

If after the set number of seconds a whois is not received; that user will be removed from the upload queue. The second box does exactly what it says.

This is the heart of the anti-leech function. Any user that has less the number in the left box or more the right box is removed from you upload queue.

This is a useful function for removing users that are sharing junk files in order to fool anti-leech tools. I suggest leaving 1 in the left box and the right box doesn’t really matter.
-Auto-UL

This sets the max numbers of uploads that you can have while MX Moni is running. If you plan on using this function, then the number in the left box must be higher than the max number of upload slots in the WinMX settings. The right box sets how many active uploads will be allowed to an individual user. If a user enters your queue and fits any of the criteria below and the extra slot provided by MX Moni is empty, then they automatically start downloading. If the slot is in use, they will start as soon as it clears. It’s a first come first serve basis for users that meet the criteria below.
![]()
The left box applies to the beginning of file names. Text is entered here the same as any other text box. The second box applies to file extensions. If you want specific types of files to be uploaded sooner, then put them here. This is useful if you are sharing many large files and still want mp3’s to get shared or any other type of extension. The third box will do the same as the others, except it works by file size. This is useful if you want to let smaller files through, but can’t let all files of that file type to auto-UL due to their larger size. I my case, I have many MPG files that I want shared sooner because they are under 10000 Bytes, but I have some MPG’s that are over 600 MB. If I set MPG to auto-UL, then the large MPG’s would take over that slot and they would take a long time to finish uploading. The mp3’s would have to wait a very long time.

Any user that enters your upload queue that has text that matches the text entered in this box anywhere in their username, will be sent to the extra upload slot when it is available

I will not cover anything about trading since I do not approve of trading. Hook your friends up, but I believe widespread trading hurts the network since users who do not trade will remain at the bottom of the queue of any user that is trading if they do not have files the trader wants.

This section is useful for eliminating slow transfers from either queue. This has some pros and cons. The user isn’t ignored, so it’s not terrible. I’ll leave it up to you to decide what kind of criteria you want to apply to your download queue. For uploads I like to disconnect any user that is not above 3 KB/s. Even a modem user can download at that speed. Generally, if a user cannot download faster than 3 KB/s, then they have too many active downloads. I like to keep my upload bandwidth as fully used as possible. They can always re-enter your queue later and try again. It’s important to note that they won’t be cancelled immediately if they fall below the set number. They must remain below the number for a few refresh cycles.
-Sound

You can assign sounds to activate when specific events occur. You just check the box and hit browse. This brings up a window for you to locate the sound file.
-Log

This controls what is sent to the log. I just leave everything checked since I don’t really care and I like to have as much information as possible. Keep in mind that the logs can grow quite large. You really don’t need log files. I recently checked my log folder since I noticed a surprising sudden usage of space in that folder. The logs had collected for about a month and were using several MB. If you don’t plan on using logs for something, then uncheck the top three boxes.
Drop-down Settings menu

This menu gives you access to two other MX Moni option windows.
-Environmental Settings

These settings are mostly simple. Choose whatever suits your needs. The Polling interval at the bottom is a little trickier. This sets how often MX Moni checks with WinMX for changes. A lower number means MX Moni will use more CPU and RAM. MX Moni doesn’t use a lot, but I choose to leave it at 2.

These settings affect your Log screen and log text file. The numbers determine how many lines stay in the Log screen buffer. The bottom box sets where log text files are stored. By default they are stored in the MX Moni directory.
-WinMX Path setup…

You use this to tell MX Moni where WinMX is located. MX Moni will not function without this set.
One last thing…

Every time MX Moni starts up it will modify your WinMX settings to force all new downloads to be expanded by default. This is only needed for the Trading functions. If this irritates you, then uncheck this box after starting up MX Moni and WinMX.
