18TH CENTURY PAIR OF PALE BLUE CANDELABRA
BASES WITH DANCING HOURS RELIEF
These are VERY old and date to the late 1700's. They are
both marked on the sides near the bottom of the drums Wedgwood only in the
very tiny letters that are unevenly spaced, as they were when the marks
were stamped in
individual letters. The furniture is solid brass with paw feet
and
embossed with scrolls and grapes and leaves. They measure 6"
tall. One is absolutely MINT. The other has a hairline crack
running the length of the drum with a chip at the top of the crack
that is about 1/8" wide (See detail photos). There is also a portion
of the molding missing at the bottom in the same area that is about 1
1/2". All this is on one side of this one. The other
piece is absolutely mint. They should be very easy to complete
because the top is threaded and just needs the candle holder portion
replaced. There is
a similar candelabras in the Frieze Room at the Beeson Collection at the
Birmingham Museum of Art in Birmingham, Alabama. You can see
them on page 113 of the book The Dwight and Lucille Beeson
Wedgwood Collection. There are actually a pair in that room that
are almost identical to mine but sadly, they did not include that
end of the room in the book photos. They are sitting on a secretary
and have about a 5 light candle holder in each of them and they are
absolutely gorgeous when complete. If you've ever been to see that
collection, you've seen these pieces. |

WEDGWOOD PAIR OF BASALT BORGHESE VASES
This pair of beautiful and rare basalt Borghese vases are exquisite
down to the last detail. The Borghese form is ancient and thought to
be of Athenian workmanship. The discovery of the original marble
vase dates to the sixteenth century, in the Villa Borghese, recorded in
1645. "Considered to be one of the finest marble vases in
existence, it has been frequently copied in marble and bronze, in
silver...." (See Wedgwood, The New Illustrated Dictionary by
Robin Reilly, Page 72). And as we all know, it was copied in many
different materials, including basalt and jasper, by Wedgwood. These
vases are indeed very fine examples of these copies.
Size: Height to top of finial 12", diameter: 6
3/4"
Marked: Wedgwood, Etruria, England (Very rare mark, only
used in the 1905-1920 time frame)
Ca: 1905-1920
Condition: Absolutely MINT and like new.
