WEDGWOOD 19TH C. WALL SCONCE
WITH SAGE GREEN MEDALLIONS. Beautiful three arm wall
sconce with sage green dip medallions that are convex in
shape, oval at the top and round at the bottom. It is made of solid
brass with gold gilt and styled typical of Wedgwood with acanthus leaf and
swag designs. The right and center arms have both been broken off
with past repair attempted using silver solder that obviously did not
hold. It will be a gorgeous piece when properly
reconstructed.
Size: 19 1/2" high, 9" across the arms.
Medallions are (oval 2 1/2" high, 2" wide), (round 1 1/2"
diameter).
Marked: Impressed Wedgwood, England.
Ca: 1891-1898.
Condition: Medallions are MINT, sconce as
described. |

EMILLE LESSORE TRAY SIGNED AND INSCRIBED. This
may very well be the most historic piece of Wedgwood by Emille Lessore
ever to come into the market. It is signed in the lower corner and
the back is inscribed in French. Translation of the inscription
reads "This tray stayed hidden in the cellar of the home of Mr.
Emille Lessore in the community of Marlotte of Bourron France, during (or
throughout) the occupation of the house by the Allemands.
1870-1871" This was the occupation of France by the Germans (
who were then the Prussians) during the Franco/Prussian War. Lessore
fled to London during this time and the tray remained in the basement of
his home during the Prussian occupation. It is unknown who did the
inscription, which is in enamel, but it is possible that Lessore himself
realized the future historic significance and did it himself. It has
also been proffered that one of his children, who were also painters, may
have done it. This piece is featured in the November 2001 edition of
The Journal of the Wedgwood Society of Queensland. For those
of you who have access to this periodical, my French translator disagrees
with the editor in that the piece stayed in Lessore's home DURING the
occupation by the Allemands, making it much more significant than the
editors tranlation of it being there UNTIL the occupation.
Size: 9 1/2" wide, 11 1/2" high
Marked: Impressed Wedgwood only.
Ca. 1860's
Condition: MINT, with only a minor amount of flaking
of the enamel around the rim.
