Hunting Up-dates

5/11/2008

The spring turkey season was good to me this year, this was my first time out and I was fortunate enough to have my good friend Roger take me out and show me the ropes so to speak. The turkeys were quiet and the first couple days we had no activity with the birds being spooky.

The third day it cooled down a bit and the birds were more active, we called in three jakes in the morning and passed on them with several Toms responding to our calls later in the day, but hung up on us and wouldn't come in.

That afternoon we setup on the edge of a small clearing just off an open field we had scouted and sure enough, there were two mature toms courting a couple hens down in the lower field. We called and go instant responses with the toms moving up toward the clearing. The hens they were courting went nuts and it was a battle that we lost, just could not pull those toms away from them hens.

Then three jakes moved in on us from the lower field so after a whispered conversation with Roger, I took the lead bird at 20 yards. I sure am hooked now and plan to hunt every spring, there is something incredible about calling in a bird and watch the show that they put on. One thing is for sure, this is something that I will never get tired of!

Happy hunting,
Rocky Clark
