Here is a great idea sent in by
Robert Ellis for tip up fishing!
Adding a 2-hole button to your line after your hook &
sinker, will keep it at the same depth, strike after strike! ( adjustable
depth gauge)
Here is another idea for marking
your tip up line, sent by Richard Barnes of Bracebridge, Ontario.
Instead of using a button as a line marker on a polar
tip up I use a piece of rubber band (white ones work great) they are easy
to tie on and remove when your done.
Fish attractant, sent by Marc Gervais
Here's a neat idea I've not yet tried but heard it works:
Buy a can of sardines, poke several holes in it and drop it down a hole
in your favorite spot. The oil should attract the fish and can make for
good fishing. I don't like the idea of littering the bottom of the
lake with sardine cans so I would tie a string on it
to pull it back up after the day is over.

Try adding flake style tropical
fish food to your wax worms. They absorb the smell and it helps attract
fish, a little trick to edge out your buddy.
Here is an idea sent by Phil
Osmun for using minnows, there is a picture of a pike he caught using this
method on the fishing pictures and stories page.
Try using salted shiners the next time you go fishing,
just cover them with table salt and place in a small container. You can
carry them in your pocket and they will keep for the entire trip.
Some tips for fishing for perch and pike sent
in by Lori Ball
There are many different things that I do when I go ice fishing
to catch and find fish through the ice. If I am to be going with a group
of people, or if there is people all around me on the pond or lake that I am
fishing on I will walk around and ask if they are catching any fish. If they
are than I will ask them if they have used scents on the jig or if they used a
flash technique. After I speak to a few people and I find out how and what the
fish are biting on, I will then go back to the area I think would hold fish.
Perch are fish that like shiny objects, or something that looks
like real bait. Perch are fish that swim in schools, when they are in schools
all of the perch are about the same size so if you catch a small perch you are
likely to catch others that same size. When perch eat they tend to
suck in their food when they eat it so when they do bite it feels like little nibbles.
Don't be afraid to let them take it for a while, wait for the line to get
tight before trying to set the hook. Some of the baits that I use are baits
like a Swedish Pimple tipped with a minnow head on the hook, and a spoon
tipped with a perch eye.
Walleye which come from the same family as the perch, are picky
eaters. One day they will only eat leaches when the next day they will only
eat minnows. They usually hang around rock ledges were there is sand, and deep
weed ledges. Walleye, just like their relatives the perch, like shinny
objects. Some of the baits that I like to use are the Swedish pimple tipped with a
minnow head, a jigging rapala or a fireball jig tipped with a rear half of a
minnow.
