Zip Utilities - These programs compress and extract files.They are not to be confused with files on a zip disk from a zip drive. Below you will find zip programs that you may download.  Just click on the program's name to start the download. A description of the program is included to help you choose the one that best meets your needs.

EnZip is a freeware ZIP compression utility that offers the following features and capabilities:

• Doc says - I have just found the program and I haven't used it yet. I'll let you know what I think.  In the meantime, I suggest trying it out. Hey, it's free and it will always compress and extract.

eZip Wizard  is a shareware ZIP compression utility that offers both compression and extraction for 30 days.  At the end of trial period file compress is disabled but the program can still be used to extract files.  The program is extremely easy to use and even a novice will be able to use it well very quickly. Download size 887 kb

• Doc says - I use it and I recommend it for everyday use. It the zip utility I go to first.

WinZip is "the leading zip utility on the web."  It handles ZIP, TAR, GZIP, Z, ARC, ARJ, LZH, AOL MIME, and encoded files.  eZip Wizard does not handle as wide a range of files, but I find eZip more user friendly, especially for zip novices.  I suggest starting with eZip and waiting to download WinZip. Like eZip, it allows users to extract and compress files for a 30 day trial. At the end of the trial period you may still unzip files must pay for the program if you wish to zip files.

HTML Editors - These programs tools for writing web pages.  To really control what  goes on the page you must know some basics of HTML. WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) programs don't always give you enough control over the process.  To make the necessary changes you need to edit the HTML yourself.  Notepad, WordPad, or any other word processor can do the job, but HTML editors are much more helpful.  I use them occasionally, but my primary web authoring programs are WYSIWYG programs with built-in HTML editors.  FrontPage Express and FrontPage 2000 are examples.

HTML Workspace allows you to modify your HTML pages easily and quickly. The most commonly used HTML tags have shortcut keys to help you insert them more quickly. HTML Workspace is free.  CNET didn't have any reviews posted because the program is new to the web. Download size 1.7 MB

• Doc says - Give it a try.  Its free and you may find it an improvement over Notepad.

• Doc says - I haven't been looking for a free HTML editor, so I found this program while looking for freeware for my students.  I haven't used it yet, but it sure looks amazingly powerful.  In fact, its interface is over powering and perhaps daunting.  Novices should start with the Easy Mode and work their way up to Easy and Hardcore Modes.  The workspace seemed small because the desktop is taken up by all the tools, especially in Normal and Expert Modes.  Maybe there is a way to zoom in on the work space.

• Doc's recommendation - Download it and give it try!  It boggles my mind that this program is free!

CuteHTML "is an HTML text editor that allows users to quickly edit HTML files with advanced features such as multiple file edit, color-coded tags, and text find and replace. It also includes drag-and-drop support (including text drag-and-drop and folder drag-and-drop), a color selector (RGB to hex), remote file save (when used with CuteFTP, color-coded printing, a floating toolbar, customizable JavaScript support for commonly used scripts, and a customizable Code Snippet feature that allows you to save and reuse code. This version includes improved integration with CuteFTP. The registration fee for this program is $19.95" (CNET).

• CuteHTML is integrated with CuteFTP.  If you download CuteFTP, the download includes CuteHTML.  However, the download link provided here is only for the trial version of CuteHTML. Download size 902 kb

• Doc says - I like CuteHTML and I get the functions I need with the trial version.  I recommend the trial version, but I wouldn't purchase the full version.

HTML Checkers - These programs check you HTML files and web pages for coding errors.  Nearly everyone forgets to close a tag or leaves a < or > out here or there.  These errors can really stump you.  On big pages searching for these minor errors can be like searching for the proverbial needle in a hay stack.  I have just started using a HTML validator and can't tell you how much I wish I had used one when I was just learning HTML.  By the way, if you are going to use a WYSIWYG HTML editor you must use a code checker!  WYSIWYG editors are notorious for poorly constructed code.

The CSE HTML Validator Lite is free a user-configurable HTML development tool that assists in the creation of syntactically correct HTML documents. "Just give CSE HTML Validator an HTML document, and it will produce a list of syntax errors in your document, which you can use when you correct your document.  CSE HTML Validator Lite is provided free of charge for those who do not need the superior HTML syntax checking and the full power of the latest commercial version of CSE HTML Validator Professional. It is aimed at casual HTML authors such as people who have personal web pages and students. It is not recommended for professional or business use. It's FAST. In fact, because its syntax checking ability is not as good as the professional version, it can check documents even faster than the professional version (CSE Validator Home Page)

• Doc says - Definitely download it!  But use it wisely. You have to know at least some HTML to use it at all.  I have also found that the light version calls up syntax errors consistently on one or two tag attributes that I know are permitted. Regardless, this is a program you really must have!

FTP Software - FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.  FTP is the way files get uploaded from your computer to the web page's host.  Nearly and web page hosts allow FTP rather than restricting you to their ready-made-templates.

CuteFTP "is a file transfer application that's easy for beginners to use and has enough features to be useful to power users as well. It uses drag and drop, bookmarks, automatic renaming, and download resuming to make FTP easier, and it includes a macro feature that you can use to record frequent tasks and play them back later with another file. SmartFTP is freeware that "allows you to transfer files across the Internet. It features an Explorer-like interface that is fully customizable and supports drag-and-drop functions. Multiple FTP connections can be opened at the same time, and you can copy files from one remote host to another. Remote host directory information is cached for future viewing, FTP URLs are supported, and you can even view HTML pages within the client. LeechFTP - is a FTP program that submits all information about any transfer into the Job Queue. Job processing is done by separate threads, so you can then continue browsing directories or connect to another server and begin another transfer. LeechFTP features a remote file viewer and localization capabilities, and fixes minor bugs in this release. This latest version includes proxy support, an updated FTP search interface, various bug fixes, a comctl32.dll check, and support for Windows 2000.

• One user says, "The Best FTP program... and its free!" I have been using LeechFTP for a while now and its great. Multiple downloads, you can download/delete whole directories with subdirectories. Very advanced features. I gave it a 4 in limitations, because improvements can be made in the queue system (can't download to a different directory, or from a mirror. A GoZilla type of things w/ mirrors would be great!) Still, some FTP programs don't have queues at all. Its better then all the other FTP programs I've used and they are Shareware! If you have to use FTP, get this now!

• Doc says - I haven't used it, but it will be the one of next FTP programs I try.  Between LeechFTP and SmartFTP I am sure you will find a free FTP utility that meets your needs.  I will give them a try soon.  I just haven't used up all of my CuteFTP trials yet.  

Color Utilities - These are small freeware programs that help you with color selection and coding.  They are quickly downloaded and simple to use.  I suggest starting with RBG Color Box and perhaps Color Picker.  There are also times that only RBGHEX will do the job, especially when looking for a web safe color.  One other recommendation, group them together in your Start menu.  They'll be easier to find that way.  (You do know how to make changes in Start, don't you?)

• RBG Color Box - Create your HTML <BODY> tags very fast with this little HTML tool. See how colors will look on page then copy and paste into the body tag.  May load/save color schemes and show background images. - Recommended for beginners. 257 kb

• RBGHEX - Gets hexidecimal colors, and can convert to web safe colors without having an expensive image program. Converts between RGB information, like 255, 255, 0, to hexidecimal format, like #FFFF00. 1.5kb

Pain Shop Pro 4 - I use and recommend Paint Shop Pro.  I am currently using version 5, but will put version 6 on my computer later this week. However, Jasc Software has version 7 available now and I expect I will upgrade to that program shortly.  Well, why should this matter to you?  Jasc allows a 30 day trial of their software and I have the trial for version 4.  I will try to find a trial for version 5, etc.  This may extend your trial period long enough for you to learn some basics and decide what you need in a graphics program.  If you want to know more or want to download the evaluation program for version 7 go to www.jasc.com.  They also have Animation Shop great program that will help you design and alter animated gifs.  An evaluation version of Animation Shop can also be from the Jasc Software Home Page.  If you are serious about web pages check out Jasc Software's products.
