Campaign Timeline

Elements of this timeline came from Champions games streaching to the dawn of softcover Champions in the 1980's. They include the Triangle Geo-Chemical campaign, the Ward Major campaign and the Minutemen campaign. Players, GMs and contributors include: Deena McKinney, Paul Patino, Keith Martin, Wayne Peacock, Brad Townsend, Jonathan Hanna, John Monk, Stewart MacWilliam, and Chad Russell.

1905
Einstein publishes his relativity theory in Germany.

1908
Vassily Nabokov, the first scientifically recorded superbeing, demonstrates an ability to fly after being exposed to the Tungaska Effect.

1909
The scientists sent by the U.S., and other governments take plant and soil samples from the site of the blast. They discover nothing out of the ordinary.

1910
Vassily Nabokov is killed during an experiment headed by the Russian "scientists" of Project Hyper-C. Faster-than-light travel is proven impossible in atmosphere.

1922
Dr. Hector, "The Boy Genius" Andrews, in his doctoral dissertation, postulates the existence of a radiation-activated, sub-atomic "virus" which is responsible for Vassily Nabokov's Powers. The paper is so esoteric and convoluted that not much can be made of it.

1925
Indigo, a masked vigilante appears in the streets of L.A. He becomes one of a small number of "mystery men" operating in the world.

1931
Doctor Arcane, a mystery man/magician based in the northeast, begins his crime-busting career. He, over the course of a few months, single-handedly cleans up the mob-run waterfront in Boston harbor

1933
Dr. Arcane, Sensei, Indigo, and the new mystery woman, Superego, form the world's first supergroup - Pentacle

1939
Indigo and Superego marry secretly and in their hero identities.

1941
During the bombing of Pearl Harbor the Ego side of Superego is killed. Id nearly kills Dr. Arcane and Indigo, but Sensei manages to kill her first. In the aftermath of Superego's death and the horrors of the attack, Pentacle dissolves. Sensei is believed to have returned to Japan; where he and other Japanese magicians begin work with the world-famous geneticist, Dr. Inari.
Dr. Arcane, heartbroken and torn between his friendship with Sensei and his loyalty to the U.S., disappears. He reappears sporadically throughout the war.
Indigo swears vengeance on Sensei and calls Dr. Arcane a "..[C]oward and friend to murderers and fascists!"

1942
Dr. Arcane speaks out against the internment of Japanese Americans.
Indigo heads up U.S. covert action in the Pacific.

1943
Project Protector started in connection with the Manhattan Project. The research team is headed by Dr. Hector Andrews.

1944
Protector, the first superbeing to have been publicly acknowledged as being created, is put to work by the Allies. A few months later the world's first self-proclaimed and self-created supervillain, Helmut Bodak, is hired by the Axis to kill Protector. Bodak and Protector effectively nullify each other's contributions to the war effort.

1945
Victor Wilde and the Wilde Bunch begin their adventuring careers by exposing Dr. Fu Manchu's attempt to enslave the world with his nefarious Blue Virus of Ardent Submission. Dr. Fu is believed to have perished when Wilde's Submarine, the Double Fish, breached his Aquadome. The band is secretive, and no one knows if it is made up of superbeings or not.
German soldiers returning from the Eastern Front spread tales of a soviet superhero, General Mayhem.
Dr. Arcane re-appears long enough to save a child who wandered into the testing area for the A-bomb. From his recovery bed he warns the president not drop the bomb.

1946
Project Protector is shut down in favor of more clandestine and radical super-soldier programs under the heading Project Myrmidon. After much hue and cry from the public, Protector is installed as the first state-supported superhero - under the Department of Justice. Protector is given full Federal Marshall powers and is given a base of operations, donated by V. Wilde, in Washington D.C. His early career is spent tracking down war criminals - especially Helmut Bodak.

1947
The United Nations Tribunal on International Law (UNTIL) is formed to monitor nuclear weapons proliferation
Victor Wilde and the Wilde Bunch uncover sketchy evidence of a vast network of criminal masterminds (some of whom are superbeings). He refers to them as the Worldwide League of Crime.
Dr. Hector Andrews disappears. His landlady claims to have seen him wink out of existence in her basement. The last she saw of him he was seated in an ornate chair, with some fan-like device behind it, surrounded in lights.

1948
America agrees to educate select Israeli scientists in the processes of Project Myrmidon
The known felon, Vinnie DeBoughanville, is released from prison after the judge refuses to accept the testimony of Indigo. The case is appealed to the Supreme Court and the decision is upheld. The Indigo/DeBoughanville precedent (that a distinctive mask or costume is not sufficient to establish identity) is set. DeBoughanville is found drowned in a bucket of water in his flat on Christmas Day. A hastily scribbled "suicide" note contains a confession to all his crimes. No hard evidence can be found of foul play.
Victor Wilde and the Wilde Bunch bust up an arms merchant's factory in Argentina as part of their unending war on the Worldwide League of Crime. He links the identity of the merchant, nicknamed "Dr Destroyer", with an expatriate German rocket scientist named Albert Zerstoiten. Dr. Destroyer gets away with the help of Helmut Bodak.

1950
Protector and Bodak disappear during a duel at Bodak's base in the Andes. A new Protector is appointed by the Army, but proves unstable - after nearly killing an undercover cop. Indigo hangs up his tights and assumes the mantle of the Protector.
The new Protector goes to Korea.

Top Secret File: ONI opened to study the possible mutagenic effects of the atomic bombs on the Japanese populace.

1952
During one of the infamous McCarthy hearings, Dr. Andrews, with a substantially modified "Timechair" reappears. He warns the shocked crowd against the path the country is taking. He personally accuses McCarthy of "hatemongering and perverting the people of this country away from the libertarian principles which led to this country's creation in the first place." When the Senator began making accusations concerning Dr. Andrews' character, Dr. Andrews replied by causing all of McCarthy's clothes to disappear. Before he could be apprehended, Dr. Andrews jumped into his Timechair and, once again, disappeared.

1954
Senator McCarthy, using Dr. Andrews' own work, attacks the superhero community as being "...the spawn of an engineered Commie-virus." When the Army and the Joint Chiefs of Staff speak out in Indigo's favor, McCarthy attacks the Army itself. Finally biting off more than he can chew, he is formally discredited by the Senate.

1955
Hanoi Xan begins a long legacy of terrorism when he hijacks the HMS Prince Albert II and holds it for a 1 million Pound ransom. The ransom is delivered by the British government, but Xan blows up the Prince Albert anyway.
Dr. Faustus returns to earth from a mysterious ":outer" dimeantion.

1960
The superbeing, El Baluarte appears as Castro's personal bodyguard, helping to foil several assassination attempts against the Cuban leader.

1964
Sidney Potter is turned into Grond.
Hernan Cortez constructs powered armor and launches his career as Professor Muerte.
The Primary Response and Interdiction Military Unified Service (PRIMUS), is created by the Johnson administration to deal with super-powered criminals.

1965
UNTIL commissions the first Stronghold to be built in the wastes of Nevada.
John Black unleashes the powers of the Black Paladin.
The Mighty Thew makes his heroing debut by saveing a group of high school students from a burning gym inlittleton, N.D.

1968
An agent is uncovered spying for PRIMUS in Stronghold. He is fired and banned from all UN facilities.

1970
The Golden Avenger is created.
El Baluarte is captured by Protector in Miami while attempting to "extradite" a prominent Cuban defector.

1972
Triangle Geo-Chemical is founded by Dr. Corbie Speers, William H. Hudson, and a group of private investors.
Black Paladin disappears after a fight with Circle, a new, mysterious supergroup in NYC.
El Baluarte is exchanged for a pair of CIA operatives captured in Havana.
Orrad founds the Metropolitan Extra-Terrestrial Enclave (METE), a halfway house/hostel/legal services facility for visitors from other planets.

1973
With financial backing from Victor Wilde, and public support from Protector, The Wildfire Network, a cooperative communications and information center for superheroes is founded. The stated purpose of The Wildfire Network is to allow superheroes to take advantage of knowledge gained by their fellows, especially in the actions and weaknesses of particular supervillains, to alert each other of activities uncovered in each others' territories, and to call for assistance when needed.

1974
Due to Congress' foot-dragging on the final set-up of PRIMUS, the Joint Chiefs of Staff set up a temporary agency, Special American Tactics (SAT), to temporarily solve the "problem" of getting UNTIL forces out of the U.S.

1975
Foxbat's attempt to rob Fort Knox is foiled by Protector when his battle van snaps an axle after running over a fire hydrant during the getaway.
Mike Perkins discovers an ancient Egyptian site that unexpectedly turns him into the Slug.
The Russian hero, the Premier, and El Baluarte foil Professor Muerte's plan to take over Cuba.
The Justice Patrol, a group of outlandish, gung-ho heroes begins operation in the NYC area. The members are: Cahoot, Bilbo, Ivory, Captain Commander and the twins - Hardware and Software. Their base, Wellsey Mansion, is reportedly run and defended by an extremely powerful robot, Mechanon.
The Parapsychological Studies Institute (PSI) begins operations in Chicago.

1978
Project Salvation is begun.
PRIMUS becomes fully operational and wrests control of Stronghold away from UNTIL.
Across the United States, several convicted murderers are maimed in their prison cells, most prominent among these are Charles Manson, and Theodore Bundy. A superbeing known as The Scissorman is implicated. The ACLU files suit against the Scissorman, but the case is thrown out citing the Indigo/DeBoughanville Precedent.

1979
UNTIL reveals the locations of two new Stronghold facilities (Alpha and Omega); one is located in Antarctica and the other in Greenland.
The Politburo announces the creation of Comintern, a Warsaw Pact superhero group led by the Premier.
Air Force Captaion Adame Peterson is shot down somewhere over northern India, perhaps by Iranians, but his body was never discovered.

1980
PRIMUS raids a secret base under the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara run by a previously unknown organization called Genocide. Evidence found there links this organization to Project Salvation.
Comintern aids the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
PRIMUS initiates the PRIMUS Police Corps (P.P.C.). The agency is given the authority through the Department of Justice to give suitable superheroes U.S. Marshall capabilities, responsibilities, and powers.
PRIMUS initiates the construction of "mini-strongholds" at several prisons and penitentiaries near those cities which have had the most history of supervillain activity. These facilities are to serve primarily as temporary holding cells while criminal charges are being processed, and while trials are in progress. The first two "mini-strongholds" are built at Riker's Island, NY and Lorton, Va.

1981
During a raid to free hostages in Lebanon, Protector and Comintern clash. Comintern is badly beaten and the Premier is killed.
Strike Force, a small group of formerly independent heroes forms in NYC.
Mechanon goes haywire when Wellsey mansion is attacked by Dr. Destroyer. The Justice Patrol manages to beat off Dr. Destroyer, but Bilbo and Cahoot die in the fight. Mechanon escapes.
Later in the year, a jet containing the remaining members of the Justice Patrol (Captain Commander, Ivory, Software and Hardware) explodes over Nova Scotia. Only their junior member, Marksman, is left.
PRIMUS attempts to subsume The Wildfire Network, nationwide superhero protest demonstrations result, and PRIMUS backs down.

1982
Protector (Indigo) is slain by the Monster during a televised Mardi Gras celebration. A day of national mourning is declared.
Marksman forms the Guardians in response to the vacuum left by the Justice Patrol. They clash first with the newly-formed Eurostar, and then with the mysterious Dr. Lirby Koo, gaining a great deal of fame and public acclaim.
The Wildfire Network expands its services to include legal services and a co-operative insurance program.
Commonality, a loose affiliation of European heroes is formed. Early membership includes Charlemagne, The Iron Scot, Guy Fawkes, Countach, Le Cardínale, Ajax, Alouette, Siegfried, and The Maestro.
Dominic Frontiere, formerly a member of the Wilde Bunch, opens a PI service in Waycross, GA.

1983
David Kurosawa, a reporter for the Triangle Observer, uncovers the Top Secret CIA file ONI, while investigating a story on the plight of nationalized Japanese during WWII. Evidence in the file suggests that the CIA, in the years following WWII, conducted several covert operations in Japan to capture persons who had been mutated by the lingering effects of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki blasts. Exactly what happened to those individuals remains unknown.
Dr. McQuark sets up shop in Atlanta.
Firewing arrives in the state of North Dakota, and with the aid of The Mighty Thew, destroys two of Genocide's Minutemen robots. Unfortunately for Thew, Firewing then turns on him and KO's him easily.
The home of the noted Miskatonic University scientist, Alfred Schwartz, is mysteriously destroyed. He and his wife were killed in the explosion, although his son escaped with severe injuries. Schwartz was known to be involved in research of paranormal powers.
After Marksman declines the government's offer to become the new Protector, a nation-wide talent search is organized to choose Indigo's successor. Lance Taylor, a relatively unknown ex-surfer from Santa Cruz, wins the contest and takes up the mantle.

1984
Eurostar's plan for world domination is foiled when Professor Muerte steals the warhead off their delivery system.
Paul Bressler steals the Anklyosaur armor from a SAT base and John MacDougal becomes Wyvern, both during a raid by their fellow agents of the nefarious Hanoi Xan.
The Enforcer, a Los Angeles-based crimefighter attracts national attention during the Olympics, when she thwarts a kidnapping attempt of Indian athletes by Sri Lankan Terrorists.
After being denounced by Castro as "counter-revolutionary," El Baluarte defects to the West, and after several months' internment and debriefing by PRIMUS, is allowed to take up residence in Miami.
A mysterious new heroine called Siren makes her appearance in California.
Strike Force splits into two groups, one retaining its original name, and the other calling itself the Shadow Warriors. The Shadow Warriors set up a secret base somewhere on Long Island.
"The Power of Being", a cable television program starring L-Ron, The Dianetic Man, premieres in Miami.
Radium becomes Atlanta's foremost Superhero.
Senator Hamilton Pendergrast, facing allegations of improper political activites brought about by Invictus, is forced to reveal that he is The Mighty Thew. Although conviced of no wrongdoings, Pendergrast resigns later in the year.

1985
The heroes Galbraith and Warp accidentally free Black Paladin during a raid on an as yet unknown organization called The Glass Hand.
The Conquerors are formed after the attempted execution of Hasan Akbar.
Senator Hamilton Pendergrast resigns - claiming that his public admission that he was The Mighty Thew made his powers in the Senate moot.
Noted boxer Clay Young retires from the ring after accidentally killing heavyweight contender Lancelot Steele.
Triangle Geo-Chemical (TG-C) decides to sponsor the world's first corporately-funded superhero group. The Sentinels are born. The original group consists of Siren, Galbraith, Impact and Warp.
Shadowjack returns to Earth and joins METE. He kills Abu Nidal shortly thereafter, precipitating global terrorist retaliation from the Nidal organization all the way up through radical elements of the World Crime League. UNTIL brands him an outlaw, and he goes into self-imposed exile on dark side of the moon.
GENEX, a R&D concern dedicated to "applying technology to the human condition",is founded. Primary facilities are constructed in the San Fernando Valley in California.

1986
Fox makes his public debut by successfully embezzling five million dollars from Exxon, and eluding an exhaustive search effort by the FBI. He becomes an instant folk hero in the U.S.
Dr. B. Banzai of the Banzai Institute receives a U.S. Patent for his oscillation overthruster.
Jameson Thomas, director of security for METE, discovers evidence of the Great Galactic Invitational War and resigns after berating Orrad for not revealing its existence earlier. Thomas convinces the Congress to create the Strategic Space Command, to be based on the Earth Defense Station and Experimental Laboratory (EDSEL), to "deter the Threat to Humanity," and to install him as its director, Star Boss.
Morgan Plantagenet is replaced on "The Power of Being" by his former co-host, Dianetrix. The producers of the show file an injunction barring his use of the name L-Ron, The Dianetic Man. Plantagenet then takes the name The Incredible Dianetron.
Richard O'Shea, second-runner-up in the Protector Competition, makes his crimefighting debut as Ricochet.
HeroNet, The Wildfire Network's public computer bulletin board service, is created.
Bloodstone leaves active service in the Temple of the East Wind to become an independant hero.
1987
Galbraith is convicted of 2nd degree murder in the death of Senator Catherine Helms and sentenced to 25 years in Stronghold.
The electric hero Ampyrion, Duke of Lightning, is accused by 60 Minutes of being a public relations creation of the nuclear energy industry.
The Harmonic Convergent, a New Age California supergroup is founded. Original members include: Crystal, Moonbeam, Barook The Mighty, Twinkle, Ricochet, and Reverb.
The Mighty Thew and Marksman start the Superhero Political Action Committee (SPAC).
The Glass Hand, with the help of an unknown super-scientist, attacks and apparently destroys the Temple of the East Wind.

1988
Galbraith is exonerated after a Justice Department investigation into the Late Senator Helms' past reveals her links to the Glass Hand, and uncovers a witness to the killing - proving that it was committed in self-defense.
A former member of the TG-C Sentinels, Hoedown, saves Tokyo from the latest rampage of Godzilla, and becomes a national hero in Japan.
Humanadyne, a California company noted for its work with problem paranormals, is targeted for acquisition in a takeover bid by Duchess Industries. TG-C comes in as Humanadyne's "White Knight" and makes it their west coast operational and research center. Dr. Rhiannon D'Alvarec, a previously obscure researcher, is appointed as Executive Administrator. Guardsman, formerly of the TG-C Sentinels, is transferred to Humanadyne, and dubbed by the press the "Humanadynamo".
The Fox files suit against Hasbro Toys, Inc. for unlawful use of his likeness in their Guardians™ Action Figure line. The case is settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. Several similar suits follow.
The Mighty Thew, Impact, and Harlequin quit TG-C after quarreling with The Accountant over the loss of their "Fantastic Car" over the Island of Dr. Destroyer (Siren later follows). They relocate to Athens, Georgia, with the help of Victor Wilde, in hopes of forming an independent hero group. The Sentinels now consist of Brunt, Calibre, Arrowhawk, and Simon Shrew.
Mutant testing programs are instituted at the Seoul Olympics, the U.S. and China are charged with two violations each.
Paranormal Paramedics, Inc., an emergency medical service for superbeings is founded in NYC.
SPAC successfully heads off a congressional investigation into the financing of The Network.
Stronghold-USA is destroyed by Mechanon. He then sends Star Boss on a wild alien chase and takes over EDSEL. Siren, Thew and friends take back EDSEL. Firewing arrives during the ensuing fight and "kills" Mechanon. He then announces the Dethec invasion.
Harlequin, Thew, Savior, and Team Banzai (The Hong Kong Cavaliers, the Kolodny Brothers and the Rug Suckers) penetrate the forcefield surrounding the Dethec Mothership using the oscillation overthruster. They foil a plot to "deactivate" the vast majority of the Earth's superheroes. The Dethec withdraw.

1989
The Mighty Thew, Siren, Harlequin, Flaggstaff, Prometheus, Demon, and Bloodstone form Ward Major. They claim backing from both Wildfire Industries, and another, mystic, source. The Mighty Thew is granted PPC authority. The group's first mission is stopping what Siren calls an "...extra-dimensional fascist and terrible dresser called The Walker."
The Sterling Institute is founded in Springfield, Virginia for the study of "...the sociological impact of paranormals in Western society." Associated with the Institute are the heroes Incisia, Prism, Flamegiggleburnbaby, the French hero Coup Fourré, former members of The Bother Squad Dove and Dianetron, and the Institute's Director, Captain Freedom.
Notion, another former TG-C Sentinel, is accused of insider trading, the case is dismissed due to lack of evidence. Congress convenes hearings on the threat to Wall Street inherent in the increasing number of telepaths.
In a landmark legal precedent, Hubbard Broadcasting Enterprises is awarded an injunction granting them proprietary rights to, and prohibiting the use by Morgan Plantagenet (now operating as The Incredible Dianetron) of, the powers associated with the name L-Ron, The Dianetic Man. Plantagenet, with the aid of Humanadyne, embarks on a quest for new powers, and eventually resurfaces as Vector™.
Paranormal Paramedics, Inc. opens franchises in Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
Knuckles Red McGee, a sentient, talking orangutang, releases his first album, "Blues Animal".
Barnstorm, a D.C. based super team is formed, apparently to help promote the new American episodes of the animated Adventures of Hoedown™. The group (Hoedown, Vector™, Ghast, The Locksmith, and Bluejay) at the time of their public debut, presented Star Boss with evidence that Dr. Destroyer was salvaging Dethec technology, and had built (occupied?) a base in the asteroids.
After a series of lawsuits, The Accountant demands that TG-C divest itself of all interests in paranormal activities. The Sentinels are disbanded, and Humanadyne is sold.
The Washington Post publishes a series of articles revealing the Sterling Institute as a front for the U.S. Secret Service.
Barnstorm relocates to Los Angeles.
Ward Major defeats The Walker in an interdimetional quest extravaganza, but their reports of saving the "MagiVerse" cannot be confirmed. Intellect, leader of the villianous Dark Force, is killed in the battle.
Aliens Among Us, by new author Kate Stevens-Smythebecomes a major best seller.

1990

[FEB] Protector Lance Taylor resigns as protector, and sets up shop as Hawaii's state hero. The President begins his search for a new Protedtor. Suprisingly, the Golden Avenger, a longtime foe of the Protector programs makes known his wishes to be the next Protector. Later that month, Invictus also throws his hat into the ring.
[APR] Ward Major dissolves after it's base is destroyed (for the 20th time) by a 100m cube of Space TitaniumTM . Dark Force, aided by a crazed Siren, claims responsibility. In the insuing battle in the Omni, Sir Cobb McCraw (a supporting member), is arrested for the televised murder of the villian Masster. TMT manages to get off, since it cannot be proved to that he and Sir Cobb McCraw are the same person. (Sir Cobb McCraw is still wanted by the police for murder and PRIMUS is also trying to bring him in.) This case promises to be a hotbed of activity for legal scholars for years to come. Polyphemus is nearly killed as well and Ward Major goes on hiatus,
[JUN] TMT applies for Protector status.
[JUL] TMT's hopes for Protectorhood are dashed after he and Bloodstone are kidnapped and mind controlled by a mentalist to attack the President. The timely aid of some UNTIL hero-agents helps TMT and Bloodstone to break the effects of the controll and stop the criminal. Unfortuneately the entire thing was captured on camera and the political repercussions of pictures showing thew chasing after Geroge Bush cause him to withdraw his name from the running. Ward major briefly re-form to save their crazed member from the Black Paladin, who is locked in Stronghold. Black Paladin, escapes from Stronghold after a demoinc horse litterally kicks its way through the mesa and tears its walls down. run free and steal a prototype of a Japanese-American anthropomorphic weapons platform. The team gets back together long enogh to track the thing down and bring it back in. Due to the strength of the robot (it took and all-out move-through punch from the thew and wasn't seriously damaged), SPAC begins lobbying against its funding, fearing another "Mutant Hunt." Jihad, the islamic super-terrorist throws his weight behind the Iraqi forces invading Kuwait.
[AUG] Dr. Destroyer bursts back onto the scene by appearing on worldwide TV and declaring that in 72 hous he will destroy the world. Nine hours later, most major cities of the world are under concerted attack from villians and villian groups of all kinds. The civillian body count is in the thousands by the second day.


POINT OF DIVERGENCE for the UNISO GAME

[SEP] Invictus is named the new Protector.
