Fighters are universal. Fighters from Iconium (humans) are almost universally male, although a few females have masqueraded as males to escape poor marriages or slavery. No women actively serve as regular soldiers in the Legions. Fighter Archetypes in Iconium Fighters from Iconium tend to have these backgrounds. Thematic Legionnaire - Every soldier in the Themes is given a plot of land according to their role in the legions. As part of their taxes they, and their descendants who wish to dwell on the land must provide a soldier to the local militia, who then reports to the Legion. Soldiers in the cavalry get more land, but are required to provide a trained warhorse as well. Wealthy patricians often recruit proxies to fight in their stead. Your character could either be one of landed soldiers, a relative who served in the themes as part of his family's requirement, or a proxy warrior paid to take the place of a more fortunate son. The Thematic legions have no specialty; their warriors are trained in many techniques. Tagmatic Legionnaire - The Tagmata are the elite troops of the empire. They are usually the sons of middle-class citizens or the non-inheriting sons of nobility. Mounted archery is the hallmark of the Tagmata - mastering that is a mark of prestige. Gladiator - Rarely, gladiators are freed from bondage due to valor, or the generosity of their patrons. A few, of course, escape… Female gladiators are uncommon, but highly prized. Local tough - sometimes people are born with natural talent. They make their lives as bodyguards or criminal enforcers. Fighter Archetypes in Faerie Fighters from Faerie tend to have these backgrounds. While not a majority, female warriors are certainly accepted in most of the fey races. Soldier - every fae king, and there are hundreds, has a stable of warriors to protect their lands and raid their foes'. Outlaw - use your imagination… Mercenary - this is considered an honorable vocation in Faerie. Most mercenaries have no trouble fighting friend or foe, but most draw the line against their own kin. Many mercenary troops also join the Iconian armies, carefully posted away from their own clan territories. These troops always fight together.
