Paladin is only open to characters from Iconium. Paladins are respected by the fey (even if thought insane). Many in Iconium have more reverence for a paladin than even a priest (or bishop).

Along with the templars, the paladins readily accept females. After all, if god to fight calls you, what do societal mores matter?

Rule 0: Paladins may multiclass as either cleric or wizard, as long as these levels do not exceed their levels as a paladin.
