Cimbri

Cimbri, half-elf, half Alfar, half aelf, etc.

Half-elf is a misnomer. These "half-elves" have their own culture, which predates the arrival of humanity, and are rightly called the Cimbri. Their lands most closely border Iconium.

They are thought of as a barbarous people, often by fae and human alike, although they can get along pretty well with either. What are stereotypical like? Cimbri tend to be bold and argumentative. They are loyal to strong leaders, their tribes, and the Druidical Order.

The cimbri count themselves losers in the war between fae and humanity. Their lands are nearly half what they were before the humans arrived — although it is also true that they took most of Balor's kingdom as their own after the Faerie Civil War.

Cimbri seem to have a facility for arcane magic. Many of the most powerful sorcerers are Cimbri.

Cultural Analogues: Picts, Scottish Celts, and Continental European Celtic traditions.

Naming Conventions: Cimbri use Pictish and Scots-Gaelic names: Cathal, Comgell, Ranald, Peris and Cormac.

The Cimbri do not use patronyms, rather they use their clan names.

Half-Elf or Half-Man?

It is true that sidhe or ljosalfar that mate with humans often produce children indistinguishable from many Cimbri. But it is also true that Cimbri parents always produce Cimbri children.

Cimbri intermarriages, which were once common in the early days of Iconium, are believed to be the main cause of fey taint and therefore, sorcerous power in humans.

These “tainted” humans, to use a phrase common in Iconium, can be sorcerers and bards, but in all other ways appear human.

The implications of the Cimbri have fueled many political and religious arguments in both Faerie and Iconium…
