Stay On The Path

It has often been said that life is a journey, and if life is a journey, each of us is on a path. We have many choices about the paths we take during our lives. However, there is only one path that counts – the path of righteousness. Although it is a straight path, we seem to have difficulty staying on it. We can greatly improve our chances by reading God’s word, praying, and trusting the Lord.

God’s Word

The Psalmist writes in Psalm 119:105, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." When the path gets dark, we need a light to keep us from stumbling on things in our path and to light up the path ahead of us. God’s word provides a light for living our lives and staying on the path of righteousness. In order for a light to work, we have to turn it on and use it. In order for God’s word to keep us on the path of righteousness, we have to read it and apply it to our lives. Directions are worthless unless we follow them.

James writes in his epistle, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all…" (James 1:5) We many times complain that we do not know what to do about a certain situation. We ask our friends, co-workers, or even our pastor. According to James, when we need wisdom about what path to take in life, we should ask God. I believe God is waiting for us to ask. We should ask God first, and if we “believe and not doubt” (James 1:6), God will give us an answer. Not always the answer we want, but God will give us the answer that we need to stay on the path.

Trust the Lord

Solomon gives this advice in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Some of us brag about being street-wise or street-smart. However, Solomon tells us twice that "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25) We may think we are pretty smart, but any path that we devise for ourselves leads to one place – death. Instead of concocting our own plans and paths, we need to trust God to guide us down the best paths with His perfect plan. Trusting God will keep us on the straight and narrow path, which leads to life rather than death.

Yes, life is a journey, and we are each on a path. What path are you on? Is it the path that leads to life? There is no other path more important. All other paths lead to death. You can walk on the path to life by obeying God’s word, praying, and trusting God.
