Fishers of Men

(Bobby is sitting on the edge of the stage. He is holding a fishing pole. Beside him is a can labeled “BAIT”. Johnny comes on stage and sits down beside him.)

BOBBY

Hey, Johnny, I thought you wanted to fish with me?

JOHNNY

I do.

BOBBY

But you don't have a fishing rod.

JOHNNY

Nope.

BOBBY

Or a fishing line!

JOHNNY

Nope.

BOBBY

You don't even have a hook!

JOHNNY

Oh, I wouldn't say that.

BOBBY

Well, it won't do you any good without a rod and some line.

(Bobby gets a bite on his line. He pulls it up, but there is nothing on the end.)

That fish stole my bait!

(Looks in can.)

And I'm all out. You didn't bring any bait, did you?

JOHNNY

Sure did.

BOBBY

Well, let's have it! What cha got? Worms? Crickets? Grubs?

JOHNNY

(pulls out Bible)

Just this.

BOBBY

A Bible! You can't use that to catch fish. Can you?

JOHNNY

'Fraid not.

BOBBY

But you said you had some bait; so, out with it. Where is it?

JOHNNY

This is it.

BOBBY

(trying to attach the Bible to the hook)

All right, man, but I don't think the fish will bite it, except maybe angel fish.

JOHNNY

No, no. This is bait for a different kind of fishing.

BOBBY

Like what? Deep sea? Fly fishing?

JOHNNY

No. Jesus said in Matthew 4:19: “Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

BOBBY

Oh, I see. No, I don't. What's that suppose to mean?

JOHNNY

(sighs)

It means that sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ is like fishing. You throw it out to people. Some bite -- they accept Jesus as their Savior -- and some don't. But just like fishing, the more times you throw it out, the better your chances of catching men for Jesus.

BOBBY

Oh, okay. So, that is the kind of fishing you had in mind.

JOHNNY

Exactly!

BOBBY

You sure you can't catch regular fish with it?

JOHNNY

Positive, but what do you say we go do some fishing for Jesus?

BOBBY

Okay. These fish aren't biting anyway.
