TELLING TALES

BY

E. E. PERRY

(The scene is anywhere. Bobby is center stage, reading a book. Suzy enters stage left. She looks around as though checking to make sure there is no one there.)

SUZY

Hey, Bobby, what’re you reading?

BOBBY

(looking up from book)

The Tale of Two Cities.

SUZY

Want to hear a secret?

BOBBY

Suzy, you know you shouldn’t go around telling other people’s secrets.

SUZY

Oh, you are probably right. You wouldn’t want to hear a secret about old man Stokes, anyway.

BOBBY

Old man Stokes? What about him?

SUZY

Oh, I shouldn’t.

BOBBY

Well, you got me curious now. So, out with it. What about old man Stokes?

(Suzy whispers in Bobby’s ear. Bobby looks surprised.)

BOBBY

(continuing)

What? I can’t believe it. Are you sure?

SUZY

Sure, I’m sure. I heard my mom tell one of her friends.

BOBBY

Wow! That’s amazing.

(Suzy exits left and Johnny enters right.)

JOHNNY

Hey, Bobby.

BOBBY

Hey, Johnny. You’ll never guess what I heard about old man Stokes.

JOHNNY

What?

(Bobby whispers in Johnny’s ear. Johnny looks surprised.)

JOHNNY

(continuing)

Wow! That’s amazing.

(Bobby exits left. Tony enters right.)

JOHNNY

(continuing)

Tony, did you hear about old man Stokes?

(Johnny whispers in Tony’s ear. Tony looks surprised.)

(Suzy enters left.)

TONY

Hey, Suzy, did you hear about old man Stokes?

SUZY

What about him?

TONY

Johnny just told me he lifted a car over his head.

SUZY

What?

JOHNNY

No… I said, “He got his head stuck in a car.”

SUZY

Huh?

(Bobby enters right.)

BOBBY

No, no, what Suzy told me was he got a new car.

SUZY

That’s not what I said. What I said was that he got that new scar, when he hit his head on a new car.

BOBBY, JOHNNY AND TONY

(in unison)

Ooohhh…

BOBBY

Well, that just goes to show you that you can’t believe everything you hear.

(Exit all.)
