Putting Your Best Foot Forward

"...with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace" (Ephesians 6:15)

During World War II, in Africa the battle lines changed quickly and often. Soldier had to move at a moments notice. One British commander ordered his soldiers to sleep with their boots on. If the enemy attacked in the middle of the night, soldiers did not have to fumble putting on their boots. By sleeping with their boots on, British soldiers were always ready to go.

A good pair of boots are important to a soldier. At times, soldiers march all day or night. The terrain can vary. They may march through sand, mud or rock. Their boots give them the support they need to move forward. The gospel gives Christians a firm foundation to stand on. Good footing can mean the difference between charging up a hill or slipping back down. Good footing in life means advancing the kingdom of Christ.

According to the Apostle Paul, the "gospel of peace" is our spiritual combat boots. As Christians, we must stand, ready to fight. God calls on Christians to advance the kingdom of Christ.

Christians should always be prepared to share their faith with others: "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope you have" (1 Peter 3:15). Christians need an intelligent understanding of the gospel. Many Christians say they are saved but cannot give an intelligent explanation of how they came to be saved or how others can be saved. One must study and memorize scripture in preparation for such an encounter. I cannot stress enough the importance of daily Bible study and prayer. A Christian cannot convey what he does not know.

The Apostle Paul calls it the "gospel of peace". Do you know peace? The peace of Christ should shine through in our daily lives so that others see it. When they ask us why our attitude and behavior is different from others, we need to be ready with the answer. The answer is the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Giving the Good News of Christ to others is a blessed thing. The more people who follow Christ, the fewer there are that will follow Satan. God praises those who go forward to tell others about Him: "How beautiful on the mountain are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace...who proclaim salvation" (Isaiah 52:7). Christians proclaim a message of peace and salvation. Are you ready to proclaim it?
