Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of equipment do I need?

• Yoga equipment, also known as ‘props,’ are very important in Iyengar yoga. Most studios provide props for general use. It is best that you have your own props, for hygiene purposes and for your home practice. At minimum, you should have a yoga mat. Other props include a block, a strap, and three Mexican-style blankets. Tammy has props available for sale, as do most studios. Props can also be purchased on line, or in stores, such as Target.

What do I wear?

• Wear clothing that allows you to move and allows your instructor to see your body to check your alignment. This includes t-shirts, tank tops, tight fitting leggings or shorts. Baggy clothing (including flare-legged “yoga pants”) get in the way and prevents the instructor from checking your alignment. Do not wear shoes or socks.

What if I have physical limitations?

• Yoga is for everyone. Poses can and should be modified to prevent injury and avoid aggravating symptoms. Always tell your instructor about any changes in your health or physical condition. This includes, but is not limited to, high blood pressure, headaches, back conditions, knee and shoulder problems, pregnancy, menstruation, flu symptoms, etc.

Should I eat before practicing?

• Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach. Unless you have diabetes or low blood sugar, do not eat within two hours of class.
